Written by Tommi-Lee S., a member of Riverside’s Horizon House

When I first came to Horizon House, I expected a social club. So, it was a culture shock when I realized it was a place to get a job or volunteer. Once I felt comfortable, I felt pride in what I was doing.

Horizon House helps lots of people with their mental health. Having a place where people can understand why you are the way you are and are accepting of it is really important in recovery. Having friends with whom you can do things (inside and outside of the Club) is especially important. Living a life without social interaction is bad for your mental health.

When I am in the community, and people ask me if I work, I tell them I volunteer at Horizon House. I say it’s a place for people with mental health issues. Unfortunately, people in our society hear about our Club and think that is where the “crazy” people hang out. I haven’t been able to talk to any of these people, but if I could, I would advocate what people are really like at the Club. Horizon House is a place that the world should be like. One member called our Club a utopia.

Everyone at the Club is patient, kind, understanding, and helpful. Everyone who comes here to work takes pride in their jobs and tasks. No one is afraid to ask for help when they need it. Everyone lends a hand. If you aren’t part of Horizon House and you meet someone who says they are from the Club, ask them about it. I wish everyone knew about our Clubhouse. I am proud to be a member of Horizon House.
