Globe Spotlight Series Protest
You may be interested in attending the protest being held on Monday, August 1st in response to the Globe Spotlight series that exploited fears about people who have a mental illness. This continuing Globe series suggests that that the entire system of community-based care is broken and that more coercive treatment is key to the solution.
Most frustrating is that the series gives the impression that people with a mental illness are violent, rather than the reality that people with a mental illness are far more likely to be victims than perpetrators. And, while the Globe mentioned that the community-based system of care is underfunded and in need of more resources to improve access, it failed to mention the many valuable programs that do exist and the many thousands of people with a mental illness who live successfully in the community.
The protest has been organized through collaboration between peer-run and psychiatric survivor groups. Anyone is welcome to attend, so please share this information with anyone you know who may be interested. Click here for more information.
This consumer led protest will be held in front of the Boston Globe office at 135 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston on Monday, August 1 from 3 to 6 PM.
